CBC North - Assignment Producer
If you’re a CBC journalist who wants to expand your horizons, CBC North has an amazing opportunity for you. We are looking for outstanding producers who can assign, vet and support a team of developing journalists as we continue to drive our editorial coverage across all platforms and bring those stories to Canadians coast-to-coast-to-coast. The initial placement will be with CBC North - Nunavut, based in Iqaluit, ideally for up to 5 months. Preference will be given to applicants who can be on-site, however a combination of remote/on-site work will be considered.
We are searching for talented people who have a genuine interest in the north and events happening in the circumpolar region, and a strong desire to mentor and coach the next generation of Inuktitut storytellers and leaders for CBC North.
You will play a key role in implementing strategies to support the promotion, preservation and revitalization of Indigenous languages. About 90 per cent of CBC North - Nunavut broadcasts are in Inuktitut. Candidates will need to demonstrate a commitment to approaching their work through a culturally inclusive lens, and recognize that this is a shared learning experience. Your colleagues are vested in bringing the lived experiences of their communities to their daily storytelling. Relationship building and trust are core to the work we do and that affects how we gather and the stories we share. We are mindful of the fact that Indigenous Peoples are experts and caretakers of their own cultures, stories and land.
While not a requirement, training on inclusive newsrooms; trauma-based storytelling; and/or Reporting in Indigenous Communities or similar learning is an asset. Previous experience working in remote communities or smaller markets is an asset.
The pace of change facing northern Canada is unrelenting, spurred by a focus on Indigenous sovereignty during a period of major geopolitical shifts; economic uncertainty and climate pressures. You’ll have opportunity to lead coverage plans on stories of regional and national importance, including construction of the first Inuit-led University in the Arctic; the increased focus on circumpolar security and how that affects Indigenous sovereignty; and how climate change is impacting resource and economic development.
As a mentor and coach, you’ll be helping the team develop the skills they need to support succession planning in the North. That includes:
Providing daily editorial oversight and planning to a small team, including pitching, assigning, vetting and producing individual segments or program line-ups, primarily in Inuktitut.
Inspiring innovation, using the available resources including tools and technologies used to gather and distribute content, and the platforms of choice. The territory is very active on Facebook.
Providing/receiving daily feedback and implement corrective actions as required
Identifying opportunities to share stories with the broader CBC and work with those program teams to ensure the focus and content reflect authentic experiences. This could require translation or sub-titling to English.
Ensuring content adheres to CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices
Bringing a genuine curiosity to learn about Inuit culture and the full range of experience, built on community, environmental sustainability, resilience.
Adaptability, pitching-in when required, changing plans accordingly and able to adjust your style to different team needs
Being collaborative, creating space for ideas to flourish and empowering people to achieve their goals.
As we continue to strengthen and elevate our northern-most journalism, we are hoping to develop a pool of people who are passionate about authentic storytelling from the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions, providing mentorship and support, and stepping in for day-of or short-term backfill when required. There will be ongoing opportunities in Iqaluit, Yellowknife and Whitehorse so we’re hoping to develop a pool of people who are passionate about authentic storytelling from the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions.
Does this sound interesting to you? If so, please let your local supervisor know. Then email Managing Editor Puglia and explain briefly why CBC North - Nunavut is a fit for you and your vision for the Producer role. Please include your CV and demo reel, and the name of your supervisor so we can discuss potential timelines. Put Expression of Interest/CBC North-Nunavut Producer in the subject header when sending your expression of interest.
Submissions will be accepted until the end of day Monday, May 25, 2026.
