CBC News: Overnight Digital Producer (deadline to apply Nov 22nd at noon ET)
The CBC News Network Digital team is looking for a producer to fill a key role in programming Canada's leading news website and app overnight.
This is a Band 12 short-term, part-time position. It is based in any CBC location in Canada, beginning ASAP.
As an accomplished journalist, you’re an excellent writer and editor with a sharp eye for a range of headlines, stories and videos that connect with contemporary Canada. You must be a critical, independent thinker capable of working efficiently and collaboratively under tight deadlines.
This is a part-time overnight position, scheduled two nights a week (Fridays and
Saturdays, 9 p.m. ET to 5:15 a.m. ET). We encourage applicants from anywhere in Canada near a CBC location to apply.
Reporting to the executive producer, you ensure the accurate and quick delivery and curation of breaking and relevant news to CBC’s digital and social platforms. You must be proficient in leveraging mobile-first packaging, using visual storytelling tools and techniques, interpreting analytics and adapting to evolving technologies. This job also requires identifying, screening and prioritizing national and international stories of interest for a digital audience.
You’re an impeccable multitasker and self-starter who is comfortable making independent editorial decisions in accordance with the CBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices, as well as the overall digital strategy. You have uncompromising attention to detail and high standards.
You care about the people you work with and have a deep knowledge of and appreciation for different perspectives, opinions and experiences. You live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
Job tasks
● Program the CBCNews.ca homepage and News App, including story lineups and video
players.
● Copy edit digital stories, social posts and video descriptions as required.
● Monitor breaking and developing national and international news.
● Craft and send breaking news alerts.
● Screen and prioritize digital stories, video, livestreams, audio and photos from across CBC
News and wire agencies.
● Work with reporters, editors and producers on digital content.
● Execute and contribute to digital publishing best practices.
● Research, write and contribute to digital stories as required.
● Liaise with assignment and newsgathering teams.
Relevant skills and experience
● Minimum five years of recent experience in a digital news environment.
● Strong journalistic skills.
● Substantial experience writing, copy editing, fact-checking and packaging news content.
● Ability to work and make editorial decisions independently.
● Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
● Ability to efficiently manage large volumes of fast-moving information.
● Understanding of how and when to leverage multimedia assets including video, audio,
photos and social media embeds.
● Stellar communication and interpersonal skills.
● Knowledge of content management systems, such as Polopoly.
● Knowledge of Canadian Press and/or CBCNews.ca style.
● University degree or equivalent.
● Ability to work weekends, early mornings, statutory holidays, as required.

Do you want to produce great audio for an award-winning show committed to uplifting Indigenous voices?
Unreserved is looking for an associate producer who knows the power of audio storytelling in Indigenous communities. Applicants can be based anywhere in Canada, and will work a hybrid schedule with a requirement to work at a CBC location as needed
Unreserved is a fearless space for Indigenous voices - our cousins, our aunties, our elders, our heroes. Rosanna Deerchild guides us on the path to better understand our shared story. Together, we learn and unlearn, laugh and become gentler in all our relations.
The successful candidate is someone who is unafraid to go straight to the heart of what Indigenous people are talking about right now, and knows what it means to tell stories from an Indigenous perspective and worldview. Our show covers a wide range of topics and does not shy away from difficult conversations, but we always leave our listeners in the light.
Strong editing and mixing skills are a key part of this position. Indigenous journalists, and journalists with experience reporting on and from Indigenous communities are encouraged to apply.
Please note, this will be a 5-month assignment beginning January 2025, with the following requirements:
Pitch compelling stories and creative treatments, with a focus on “do-ers” and “changemakers”, ie. people taking some kind of action in their communities
Use music, sound and voice to create dynamic narratives
Chase, research and write focused greens.
Edit tape in Dalet
Write engaging content for social media platforms.
Produce content for digital.

Temps are called in to work to replace permanent employees when they take a break for holidays or special projects etc. While Temps are employed at the CBC all year round, there are three main periods for Temp hiring:
Summer (early May-mid September)
Year end holiday break (early December-mid January)
Leading up to fiscal year end (early February-end of March)
